After an illness derailed Manuel’s Navy career, he spiraled into unhealthy substance use and legal issues, including a lengthy prison term. Then he found stability and success through VA support and mental health therapies. “I was in handcuffs; I was in prison,” says Manuel, now a peer support specialist. “But I work for the VA now.
