The Veterans Life Center: Current Status

The Veterans Life Center (VLC) project is moving forward, with an opening of the facility in Butner anticipated in the spring of 2020.  Construction on the 44,000 sf building is well advanced, almost completely enclosed, with plumbing and electric work underway.  It will be a residential facility, with a capacity for 100 beds and will serve 21^st century male and female Veterans having difficulty reintegrating into civil society.  Working with the VLC staff of professional case managers, residents will help design their own Individual Veterans Reintegration Plan.  The VLC will see to it that they get the therapy they need from nearby institutions such as the VA Hospital in Durham, the Stephen A. Cohen Center, and the R.J. Blackley Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Center.  They will also receive life skills training, spiritual and family counseling ,and follow-on mentoring.  In cooperation with Vance-Granville Community College and other institutions, residents will receive vocational education, training, and certification.  Retired Marine Corps Brigadier General Thomas Gorry, once base commander at Camp Lejeune, has been hired as Executive Director to implement the Center’s program and manage its operations.
