For many reasons, former Service Members may not self-identify as being Veterans. Thus, it is up to the provider to find out whether the person served or if the person has a loved one who served. People who serve in the military may have injuries, illnesses, and/or disabilities related to their service that may have implications for their treatment and care. They also may have experienced trauma (e.g., IED explosions, witnessed combat deaths, or military sexual trauma) or exposure to Agent Orange or open burn pits. Please download the document for questions to ask and for the rationale why.
