In North Carolina, an estimated 5 Veterans die by suicide each week. This devastating statistic prompted the North Carolina Governor’s Working Group on Veterans, Service Members, and their Families (GWG) to launch an initiative highlighting the imperative to reduce the number of Veteran suicides. Last November the GWG conducted a conference on preventing Veteran suicides; this was followed by a focus on the topic in the February to April monthly meetings.
September marks National Suicide Awareness Month, and the GWG is continuing its multi-media Campaign to Reduce Veteran Suicide. On September 9, the Campaign will kick off with a series of interviews with North Carolina Veterans—Words to Live By. We plan to push these brief interviews across social, web, and broadcast media outlets. Please share them via your communications networks.
