The US Department of Veterans Affairs has launched a campaign, More Than Just a Number, to help Veterans and family members protect themselves against identity theft.  They have set up a VA Identity Theft Help Line, 1-855-578-5492, that is open Monday through Friday, from 8:00a to 8:00p (EST).

Another step is for Veterans and family members to freeze credit data.  Three companies—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—are known because they offer credit scores.  However, another online service that they offer is to freeze credit data for free, which will prevent identity thieves from accessing credit cards and using personal data.  It doesn’t take long, maybe 15 minutes total, to freeze your credit on all three services:
