North Carolina is one of a network of states (CA, National Capital Region, NY, NC, OK, PA, RI, SC, TX, VA, and WA) participating in AmericaServes, an initiative of the Institute for Military and Veteran Families (IMVF) at Syracuse University.  AmericaServes is a platform for public and private agencies and nonprofit organizations that provide services and resources to Veterans and their families in selected communities.  NC has four regions where NCServes operates—Metrolina in Charlotte/Mecklenburg and proximal counties; Central Carolina, which extends from the Triad to the Triangle; Coastal Carolina in eastern NC, and Western Carolina and surrounding counties.  About 64% of the Veteran population in NC reside in one of the four network service areas.  These four networks have responded to 10,602 requests from 4,768 clients through referrals to 230 network providers.

This newsletter highlights NCServes Western; this catchment area serves 26 counties with more than 90,000 Veterans.  The Asheville-Buncombe Community Christian Ministry (ABCCM) is the Coordination Center and has signed up 61 participating agencies and organizations in health care, education, housing, employment, benefits, recreation, and legal services.  As of January 2018, 94 clients have made 178 requests.

On March 8, the IVMF and the Walmart Foundation in partnership with ABCCM and the Charles George VA Medical Center, will conduct a ribbon cutting ceremony of kiosks at the Charles George VAMC-Atrium, 1100 Tunnel Road, Asheville 28805, from 10:30 to 11:30am.  It will be followed by a 6-month In-Progress Review (IPR), at St. Marks Lutheran Church, 10 North Liberty Street, Asheville 28801, from 12:30 to 3:00pm.  The IPR is an update of the network’s performance against its qualitative and quantitative goals.  In addition, the IPR provides an overview of the users’ demographics and a discussion of ways to improve the services available in the network.

Updates on the other NC Serves sites will appear in future newsletters.
