The US Department of Veterans Affairs has adopted a “whole health” approach to the patient-centered care that Veterans receive. Through this approach, Veterans are empowered to take responsibility for their own health and well-being. The VA has launched a website, Whole Health for Life which focuses on the individual Veteran’s health priorities. In addition to Whole Health for Life, the VA has developed some new programs aligned with this approach including the Whole Health system video series; a personal health inventory; home-based primary care; telehealth and telemental services; and a home-based mental health evaluation (HOME) program.
The Whole Health for Life program includes suicide prevention, which is the top clinical priority for the VA. Of note for Veterans in crisis are the Veterans Crisis Line responders and suicide prevention coordinators located at each of the four VA Medical Centers in North Carolina.
